Chapter 12

“They’re going to that club again. But together this time.” Pacing back and forth in Beckett’s office, I couldn’t understand how he was so calm.

“They’ve been seeing each other for several weeks. I’m surprised they didn’t go back before this.” Beckett snorted and went back to grading papers. “They’re both adults. If you’re so worried, then you should have asked to go too.”

“What?” The idea had me freezing mid-step and I almost tipped over. “You’ve got to be kidding.”

There was absolutely no logic in that. Beckett sighed and pushed back his chair. “If you’re worried or confused, then you need to talk to Cody. Hell, talk to Ford. I’m sure he’ll answer any questions you have.”

Talking to Cody about it would be difficult enough, but with a stranger? A stranger who did God knows what with Cody? Something about Beckett’s tone had my mind drifting back to what he’d said and rolling the words around in my mind.

“You know him.” He said the name too casually and with too much confidence for the guy to be a stranger.

Beckett shrugged, looking slightly guilty. “Kind of. Don’t give me that look. At first I had no idea who the guy was that he was interested in. Once I talked to the club owners and then to Cody a little more, I realized who it was. That doesn’t change my advice, though. Talk to one of them, at least.”

“I can’t do that. It would be like checking up on him.”

“So first he was too young and now he’s too old to ask questions.” Beckett grinned. “You know you sound crazy, right?”

Considering that I felt crazy sometimes, it wasn’t surprising.

“He’s been honest with his choices, so I have nothing to question him about.” That was mostly correct.

“Bullshit. You still haven’t asked him about what they’re doing or what he wants long-term.” He gave me a questioning look and when I didn’t confess my sins, he kept going. “I happen to know firsthand he’d be willing to answer your questions, so don’t give me that.”

Having the same friends sucked.

“I’m honestly not sure I’m ready to know.” There were so many possibilities and it was just too much.

“Then you can’t complain when he goes out.” Beckett sat forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “You can always ask him not to share things with you.”

I shook my head. “No.”

I didn’t even have to question that. Not knowing would be worse than only knowing part of it.

Beckett shrugged, clearly trying not to laugh. “Then you have to relax and just deal with it.”

Yes, because worrying about someone was that easy to turn off.

“How about you have dinner with Finn and me?” Beckett paused, and when I didn’t immediately turn down the offer he kept going. “We’re meeting some friends at the house in a little while and it might do you some good to get out. The only time you’ve done anything lately has been with Cody.”

Dinner sounded good, but some of Beckett’s friends were nosy…and weird.
